Are QR Codes Gaining Traction?

440% INCREASE IN MOBILE SCANS

ScanLife

LISTEN To The Daily Numbers podcast [MP3]

ScanLife recorded 3.7 million mobile scans through their bar code app through the first three quarters of 2010.
In 2011, that number rose to 20 million for the same period.
That accounts for a 440% increase in scans.

THOUGHT: There has been some question about just how common it is for a consumer to use a scanning app or, even, whether they even know what QR codes are.

The ScanLife app handles both traditional bar code scanning as well as QR codes and it saw tradition, 1D bar code scans in the Grocery category jump from 14% of scans last year to 40% this year.

That would seem to indicate that the act of scanning from a mobile app, regardless of the type of code scanned, is becoming more common. This bodes well for the widespread consumer adoption of QR scanning because the act of scanning is the same.

The challenge, then, is consumer education about QR codes are and their benefits.

After all, once someone points them out what they are, you tend to start seeing them everywhere.

SUPER COOL TOOL TUESDAY: QReateBUZZ is a QR code generator with analytics. Awesome.

Thank you for telecommuting.
