Adult Americans will spend an average of 4 hours, 1 minute (4:01) on mobile devices per day in 2020, with 3:35 of that time spent on mobile apps.
Mobile app time will be up by 25 minutes from 2019, well above the long-term growth trend, with the pandemic as the main driver for this increase. Read the rest at eMarketer.
These numbers prompted me to check my own mobile media consumption. I am admittedly an outlier from the average because I am both an information omnivoire and I curate content to my social media channels on an hourly daily basis.
Even so, I was a little taken aback by how much time I actually spend consuming content on my phone.
The pandemic is likely driving increased use of some types of apps.
The number of smartphone food delivery app users, for example, will rise 25.2% to 45.6 million this year.
That figure is expected to decrease slightly in 2021, to 44.1 million, as restaurants likely reopen to indoor diners.
Restaurant mobile app usage has likely increased as they adopt to drive-through business models, as I discussed in episode 320 of the Beyond Social Media Show.
Likewise, grocery store apps have likely seen greater adoption due to the pandemic.
Other industries, such as travel and hospitality, have seen a plunge in app use.
This year, for example, Airbnb’s US adult user base will fall 60.0% to 17.0 million. This is the first time that the company has experienced negative user growth.
