Gamers Who Have Downloaded A Video Console Game, October 2014 [CHART]

Digital video game distribution is coming, but it’s not here yet. According to October 2014 polling by MarketCast, while about half of US video gamers who owned an internet-connected console like PlayStation or Xbox had paid for a game via digital download on that device in the past year, 53% of US video gamers preferred to buy console games via physical copy, compared with 22% who favored digital downloads. In addition, digital distribution accounted for just 18% of console game purchases, compared with physical’s 82% share.

However, there are signs that this won’t last forever. Those who owned a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One—newer consoles—were more likely to have downloaded digitally than those with PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, indicating a shift toward digital as console gamers adopt more advanced devices.

In addition, fully 76% of video gamers said digital downloading was the future of game buying—whether they liked it or not—and 48% of gamers expected to be personally downloading more games digitally in two years. Read the rest at eMarketer.
