An end-of-year checklist item for anyone in communications should really be to take a critical look at their web presence to determine whether you need a refresh or maybe a wholesale upgrade.

Web technologies and styles evolve over time. Back in the day when I first started, you hand-coded individual HTML files, strung them together with hyperlinks, and, if you were wise, avoided the spinning-logo animated gif and the Javascript scrolling messages.

Then we learned about relational-databases, scripting languages, and built our own content management systems from scratch. Somewhere around that time was the Flash Era, the Dark Ages of the Web.

Now we have open source CMS like WordPress, Ajax, HTML5, responsive designs, Web fonts, and parallax scrolling. For all these reasons, you should ideally give you Web presence a refresh every two years.

But if you’re like me, and you use your web site(s) as a personal sandbox to try things out, you should really take a critical look every year because code tends to accrete from all your experiments and slow your site down significantly.

This is a long preamble to say that I’m long overdue for a refresh and an upgrade and, so, please pardon the interruption. I will be giving this site a major upgrade and refresh. I’ve already done a refresh on the e-Strategy Trends sister site, so now it’s this site’s turn.

The site will look a little weird for the next few days because I don’t really want to shut it down with a Coming Soon notice and deny you all the content and, more importantly, I have a day job, so I don’t have the time to do this properly with a testing site, etc.

It should only take a few days, so thank you for your patience as I upgrade.
