eMarketer estimates that the number of social network users in the Middle East and Africa will rise 22.6% this year to hit 216.0 million, representing 63.6% of internet users and just 15.6% of the region’s population. In addition, we expect 185.0 million residents in the Middle East and Africa—85.6% of the social network audience, 54.5% of internet users and 13.4% of the population—to use Facebook in 2014.
Q4 2013 research by GlobalWebIndex found that a similar number of internet users in the Middle East and Africa accessed Facebook (52%)—the No. 1 social network in the region. Second-place Google+ trailed by 21 percentage points.
A November 2013 study by Gemius found that Facebook usage in the Middle East and Africa varied across countries. Out of the nations in the region studied—Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)—Facebook user penetration among internet users was much higher in Egypt and Jordan, with around eight in 10 internet users in each country using the social network.
