ANDROID DOMINATES MARKET SHARE
The Neilsen Company
As of March 2011, 37% of mobile consumers who owned a smartphone had a device with an Android OS.
27% of consumers have devices with Apple iOS.
22% of the market uses Blackberry.
THOUGHT: The same study shows that Android devices are more desirable, with 31% of consumers wanting the Android OS, narrowly beating the 30% who want iOS.
This would seem to vindicate the Let A Thousand Flowers Bloom strategy Google has taken with Android by making the OS open source and adopting an open-door policy to app developers.
While Apple’s closed garden approach to the app store does ensure they control the customer experience, it also has the effect of frustrating the very mobile app developers who make iPhones more appealing by extending its functionality and usefulness.
