This is brilliant.
Video game publisher Ubisoft (one of my favorite publishers, by the way) has commissioned one of the company’s divisions, Hybride, to produce a series of short films set in the Assassin’s Creed video game universe.
Hybride is a special effects outfit whose work includes the movie Sin City. Assassin’s Creed is one of Ubisoft’s best-selling video games, set in the 15th century from the point of view of a Knights Templar.
By using the Assassin’s Creed environment as the setting for a new series of original content, Ubisoft combines product placement with movie/video game trailers with the short film format to create an entirely new media animal tailored for the digital age. The content is in and of itself entertainment. It promotes the Assassin’s Creed video game franchise by demonstrating how cool that world is. It also extends Assassin’s Creed by creating a film franchise that will be of interest to existing fans while also holding the promise of creating new fans of both the film series and, for those who are not already fans of the game, provoking interest in them becoming fans of the game.
A short film series also, by the way, is a great way of testing the viability of a feature-length film.
Here’s the first installment of the film series. Found at YouTube from AssassinsCreed.
